Every Move the Aang Movie Made, 2021–2026
Two delays, a jump to streaming, two title changes, a leak, an arrest and a two-week campaign: how Avatar Studios' first film finally arrived.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender has streamed on Paramount+ since July 25, 2026. Getting there took more than five years, two delays, two title changes, a move from theaters to streaming, a leak, an arrest and a marketing campaign that lasted just over two weeks.
This timeline sticks to what Paramount, Avatar Studios and the filmmakers said, and flags the places where coverage supplied reasons the studio never gave.
2021–2022: A studio, a director and a date
ViacomCBS announced Avatar Studios at its Investor Day on February 24, 2021. The new Nickelodeon division was led by co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, and its first announced project was an animated theatrical feature.
On June 15, 2022, The Hollywood Reporter named Lauren Montgomery as director and reported that three animated Avatar films were in the works. Sydney's Flying Bark Productions was reported as the lead animation studio that October, with a hybrid 2D and CG approach.
On November 10, 2022, Paramount gave the untitled film a theatrical date: October 10, 2025.
2023–2025: An adult cast, two delays and a new title
Paramount's CinemaCon presentation in April 2023 confirmed that the film would follow Aang and his friends as young adults.
The first delay came on April 18, 2024. Paramount moved the film, then called Aang: The Last Airbender, to January 30, 2026 without giving a reason. It also revealed an adult voice cast: Eric Nam, Jessica Matten, Román Zaragoza and Dionne Quan, who voice Aang, Katara, Sokka and Toph in the finished film, plus Dave Bautista as the villain. William Mata joined Montgomery as co-director. The recast meant the original actors would not return in the main human roles.
Steven Yeun joined in March 2025 in an undisclosed role. That July, the creators confirmed he would voice the adult Fire Lord Zuko, the part Dante Basco originated.
At CinemaCon on April 3, 2025, the film became The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. On May 16, Paramount moved it again, from January 30 to October 9, 2026. Reports at the time cited delays in animation production. Studio Mir was reported as an additional animation studio the same week.

December 2025: Theaters out, Paramount+ in
On December 23, 2025, Paramount+ announced that the film, now labeled a working title, would skip its October 9 theatrical date and premiere on the streamer in fall 2026. The same release made Paramount+ the exclusive streaming home for Avatar Studios' animation.
It also named six cast members: Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Freida Pinto, Ke Huy Quan, Peta Sergeant and Dee Bradley Baker, back as Appa and Momo. Steve Ahn joined Mata as co-director.
Paramount gave no reason for dropping theaters. Slate later connected the decision to Skydance's takeover of Paramount, a link the studio has not made itself.
March–April 2026: A wrap, a final title and a leak
The production wrapped with a party and a cast-and-crew screening on March 7, 2026, where the new title, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, appeared on screen. Konietzko said new branding would be announced soon. Montgomery marked the end of the four-year project and said publicly that the film deserved to be seen on a big screen.
Clips from the unreleased film appeared on X on April 11 and 12. The account posting them claimed Nickelodeon had emailed it the movie by mistake and threatened to stream the whole thing unless Paramount released a trailer. A full copy followed. Some later coverage tied the retitle to the leak, but the new title had been shown weeks earlier.
On April 16, Variety reported that Paramount's investigation found the leak did not come from inside the studio or its systems. Slate, citing The Hollywood Reporter, later named a hack at the screening vendor Vision Media as the most likely source.
On April 24, Singapore police announced the arrest of a 26-year-old man suspected of remotely accessing a media-content server without authorization, downloading an unreleased film and posting parts of it online. Police had received a report on April 16. The offence carries up to seven years in jail, a fine of up to S$50,000, or both. Police did not name the film; local and trade outlets identified it. No public report has linked the man to the X account, and no charge or sentence has been reported.
July 2026: Two and a half weeks from trailer to premiere
On July 7, Paramount+ moved the premiere up to July 25 worldwide and released the first trailer and key art, which introduced Bautista's character, the ancient airbender Tagah. SlashFilm criticized the resulting campaign of just over two weeks. Paramount gave no reason for the earlier date, though some coverage linked it to the leak. The October 9 slot went to Avatar: Seven Havens.
On July 15, Paramount added a one-week theatrical run from July 24 to 30, three shows a day, at AMC Empire 25 in New York and an AMC theater in Burbank. Sources disagree on which Burbank location. Tickets went on sale July 16 and sold out quickly. Wikipedia, citing Variety, says the aim was eligibility for the Oscar shortlist. No awards submission has been confirmed.
Reviews arrived July 20. Rotten Tomatoes counted 90% positive from 49 reviews, and Metacritic gave it 68 from 13. Critics praised the animation and action; the most common complaints were the pacing and the aged-up characters.

Avatar held its first Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23. The next evening, the film had its world-premiere fan screening in Ballroom 20, the limited run opened, and Milan Records released Jeremy Zuckerman's 36-track score. Paramount+ premiered the PG-rated, 99-minute film worldwide at 12:00 a.m. PT on July 25.
Since release
FlixPatrol rankings cited by ComicBook.com had the film as Paramount+'s top movie in the US and 27 other countries in its first days. Collider reported it at No. 1 on the service's worldwide movie chart over a late-August weekend, and FandomWire had it at No. 2 on October 11. These are third-party rankings. Paramount has released no viewership figures and no official gross for the theatrical run.
On September 1, the film was dated for Blu-ray and DVD on November 3, 2026, with a 4K Ultra HD edition, sold only as a SteelBook, on February 9, 2027. No bonus features had been announced as of September.

A follow-up film is not on the schedule. Paramount described the movie in 2022 as the first of three, but no second film has been greenlit. At Comic-Con, DiMartino told GamesRadar+ that Avatar Studios is making TV series "but not features at the moment." The secret series the team teased that week appears to have been Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos, announced October 9 with Konietzko as showrunner. Montgomery told Cinema Femme she hopes this isn't the characters' last trip to the big screen.
