Avatar Books and Comics: What's Out and What's Next

No Avatar publishing license has changed hands, but the shelf has rarely been this crowded. Dark Horse publishes the comics. Abrams publishes the young-adult novels through its Amulet imprint, plus the film's tie-in novel and art book. Random House and Golden Books handle the children's titles, Insight Editions the cookbooks and reference guides, and DK joined this year with a Visual Dictionary. Here is what each has out now and what is dated next. For where each story sits in the timeline, see our era-by-era reading order.

Chronicles of the Avatar (Abrams/Amulet, young adult)

The novels about past Avatars come in pairs. Six are out:

• The Rise of Kyoshi (2019) and The Shadow of Kyoshi (2020), by F.C. Yee
• The Dawn of Yangchen (2022) and The Legacy of Yangchen (2023), by F.C. Yee
• The Reckoning of Roku (2024) and The Awakening of Roku (December 30, 2025), by Randy Ribay

The Awakening of Roku closed the Roku pair. Three years after the first book, Roku is pulled away by an illness spreading in the North and works with Gyatso and the waterbender Makittuq to contain it.

Next is The Tempest of Sonam by Ribay, due July 20, 2027 as a 368-page, $21.99 hardcover. It is set thousands of years before Aang, before the Four Nations existed. Seventeen-year-old Avatar Sonam, known for protecting people from raiders, faces the secretive Four Pillars and their firebender Asiong, who is hunting practitioners of the lost art of energybending. Sonam was introduced in this year's Avatar Aang film. Abrams has not announced a follow-up.

For collectors, The Yangchen Novels Ultimate Collector's Edition came out October 6: both Yangchen books in one 672-page, $49.99 volume with a foil-stamped cloth slipcase. The matching Kyoshi edition from 2025 shows as sold out on the Abrams store.

Abrams also runs a second YA line. Judy I. Lin's Avatar Legends: City of Echoes (2025) follows Jin, a war refugee in Ba Sing Se's Lower Ring. No second book has been announced.

Dark Horse's 2026 comics

• The Kyoshi Warriors #1–3 (May 6, June 17 and July 15): Brandon Hoàng's miniseries follows Suki's warriors on the Earth Kingdom mainland under General Andal, between Suki's first two appearances in the cartoon.
• The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand (July 28): Kiku Hughes and Alexandria Monik's graphic novel, in which Kya tells a recovering Korra about a youthful trip to the Si Wong Desert town of Liyuan.
• Chibis Volume 2: Sokka's Boomerang Class (July 28): a 48-page hardcover for ages 5 to 8.
• Avatar Legends: Masters of the Elements Volume 1 (August 25, moved from July 14): the first volume of an anthology series, with stories about Yangchen, Kyoshi, Roku, Aang and Korra.
• Jet: Rebels and Rhinos (September 8): Faith Erin Hicks and Peter Wartman's story of how Jet formed the Freedom Fighters.

Dark Horse also finished its Avatar run on WEBTOON on June 5 with episode 118.

Coming from Dark Horse

• The Kyoshi Warriors Volume 1 (November 10): all three issues in an 80-page, $13.99 paperback.
• Enter the Blue Spirit (February 23, 2027): Hicks and Wartman's next book. Early in his exile, Zuko becomes the Blue Spirit for the first time to protect a forgotten Fire Nation colony on the Earth Kingdom coast. It is 80 pages and $13.99.
• Fire and Family Treasury Omnibus (June 1, 2027): a $29.99 paperback collecting Azula in the Spirit Temple, The Bounty Hunter and the Tea Brewer and Ashes of the Academy.

After the Comic-Con publishing panel in July, Hoàng said he is writing more Kyoshi Warriors comics and a new Legend of Korra comic. Neither has a title, artist or date, and Dark Horse hasn't listed either. A fan-wiki summary of Hicks' newsletter says a third villain-focused book will follow Jet and Blue Spirit, but Dark Horse calls both standalones and has not announced a third.

One more comic has no confirmed publisher yet. The Legend of Korra: The Long Game, a three-part graphic novel written by Michael Dante DiMartino and drawn by Alexandria Monik, was revealed around New York Comic Con on October 8. It features Korra, Bolin, Zaheer and Tokuga. No publisher or release date has been confirmed.

Avatar Aang film tie-ins

Random House has two for younger readers:

• Meet Team Avatar (September 1): a 32-page Step into Reading leveled reader.
• The Junior Novelization (October 13): David Lewman's 144-page, $7.99 paperback for ages 6 to 9, with an eight-page color insert.

Abrams has two more on November 10, and sold early copies of both at its New York Comic Con booth:

• Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, Allison King's novelization of the film with expanded scenes ($30, 256 pages).
• The Art of the Movie by Ramin Zahed ($50, 256 pages), with concept art and commentary from DiMartino, Bryan Konietzko and director Lauren Montgomery. A $100 Deluxe Edition adds vellum chapter openers styled like animation cels and a cloth slipcase.

The art book was pulled into an AI controversy in July, when commenters traced a Comic-Con panel slide referencing ChatGPT to a presentation for it. Abrams said the panel images were not tied to the book, and the film's crew denied using generative AI.

For young kids

• Bending Academy: Fire #2, Build the Flame! (January 5, 2027): Ash J. Wu's illustrated chapter books for ages 6 to 9 continue after Light It Up! from November 2025. Random House publishes them.
• Small Team, Big Dream (January 19, 2027): a Funko Pop!-themed Little Golden Book of opposites. It follows I Am Sokka from January 2026.

Reference and lifestyle

• Avatar: The Last Airbender Visual Dictionary (DK): out in the UK since September 10; the US edition from DK Children arrives November 10 at $24.99. Avatar Studios' Joan Hilty wrote the foreword.
• Avatar Legends: The Official Character Encyclopedia (Insight Editions): Benjamin A. Wilgus covers nearly 100 characters from the shows, the books and the Aang film. It costs $40 and ships after December 15.
• The Official Oracle Deck and Guidebook (Insight Editions): 52 cards and a 128-page guidebook by Amy Chase and Amanda Wolf, $24.99, shipping after January 12, 2027.
• Already out from Insight: The Official Baking Book (September 2025), the Relics of the Four Nations keepsake kit (March 10) and The Official Book of Amigurumi, with more than 20 crochet patterns (August 25).

Free comics moved this year

Dark Horse's free Avatar comic changed events in 2026. Instead of Free Comic Book Day, it appeared on May 2 as part of Penguin Random House's new Comics Giveaway Day, held the same day. The flip book paired an Avatar Legends story with Minecraft: Heart of Cobblestone. Its Avatar story, "Earth and Water" by David M. Booher and Bailie Rosenlund, follows young Roku and the earthbender Sud. It is reprinted in Masters of the Elements Volume 1, along with 2025's Free Comic Book Day story, "Ramen Rumble."

Neither Avatar: Seven Havens nor the newly announced Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos has a book or comic tie-in announced.
