Netflix's Avatar Season 3: Everything We Know About the Final Season

Book Three: Fire is filmed and in post-production. Here's what is official and what is only reported.

Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender ends with Season 3, and that season is already shot. It was filmed back to back with Season 2, wrapped in November 2025 and has been in post-production since. What Netflix hasn't given fans is a date. Here is what the streamer has confirmed, what has only been reported, and where Season 2 left the show.

When Season 3 arrives

Netflix says 2027. Tudum confirmed the window on September 3, 2026, along with a first-look image of Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. No month or day has been announced. What's on Netflix estimates late 2027 or early 2028.

Netflix ordered Seasons 2 and 3 together in March 2024, about two weeks after Season 1 premiered, and set Season 3 as the ending to match the animated show's three books. Both seasons were shot mainly in Vancouver. On November 10, 2025, Netflix marked the end of production with a set photo of Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Dallas Liu, Miyako (formerly credited as Miya Cech) and Maria Zhang.

Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani run the show, as they have since April 2024, when Season 1 showrunner Albert Kim stepped back to an executive producer role.

Don't expect convention footage soon. Coverage of San Diego Comic-Con and New York Comic Con this year shows no live-action panel at either; the Avatar stage time went to Paramount's animated projects. Netflix has not released a Season 3 teaser.

The story: Book Three: Fire

Season 3 is expected to adapt Book Three: Fire, and Netflix says it takes the Gaang deeper into the Fire Nation. Boylan said the Season 2 ending and the Season 3 opening were planned from the first week in the writers' room.

That ending left a lot open. Ba Sing Se fell, Zuko sided with Azula, and Azula struck Aang with lightning while he was in the Avatar State. Katara used her saved Spirit Oasis water on him, but the season ended without saying whether he survives. Cormier, in Netflix's finale explainer, said Aang "does die or almost dies." Toph, captured and cut off from the group, discovered metalbending.

The stakes come from the original lore: if the Avatar is killed in the Avatar State, the reincarnation cycle ends for good. Netflix's Season 3 teases point to Aang's recovery after nearly dying, along with a major Azula storyline.

Who's in the cast

Netflix's Season 3 article lists seven actors as joining. Only two are new to the show:

  • Jon Jon Briones as Piandao, the master swordsman who trains Sokka in the cartoon
  • Tantoo Cardinal as Hama, the Southern Water Tribe bender who invented bloodbending

The other five already appeared in Season 2: Terry Chen (Jeong Jeong), Dolly de Leon (Lo and Li), Lily Gao (Ursa), Madison Hu (Fei) and Dichen Lachman (Avatar Yangchen). Netflix announced all seven together in May 2025, as Season 3 production began.

One name remains unconfirmed. Deadline reported in May 2025 that Adam Beach would play Hakoda, Sokka and Katara's father, in Season 3. Netflix declined to comment, and Beach has not appeared in any official Netflix cast list through September 2026. Joel Montgrand played Hakoda in Season 1.

Reported, not confirmed

These details come from What's on Netflix, mostly citing Knight Edge Media. Netflix has confirmed none of them.

  • Seven episodes, the same as Season 2. Metacritic's listing and Writers Guild credits cited on Wikipedia also point to seven.
  • Episode titles: "The Khandul," "Eight Minutes," "Spirit of All Nations," "Ghosts of the Old World," "Fire Remakes the World," "Two Islands" and "All Who Stand Against the Flame."
  • Directors: Raisani for episodes 1–2 and the finale, Rachel Goldberg for 3–4 and Karen Gaviola for 5–6.
  • A location shoot in Iceland from about May 25 to June 24, 2025, with the rest filmed in Vancouver under the codename "Diner Bear."

The numbers Season 3 inherits

Season 2 gave critics more to like and audiences less to watch. Rotten Tomatoes shows 71% from 24 reviews, up from Season 1's 62%, and Metacritic gives it 68 against Season 1's 55. The Rotten Tomatoes audience score has slid to about 52%.

Viewership fell sharply. Season 2 drew 8.7 million views in its first four days, down 59% from Season 1's 21.2 million, Variety reported. It then spent six weeks in Netflix's English TV Top 10:

  • Week 1 (June 22–28): 8.7 million views, No. 2
  • Week 2: 9.6 million, No. 3
  • Weeks 3 to 5: 5.2 million, 3.4 million and 2.3 million
  • Week 6 (July 27–August 2): 1.6 million, No. 10

That adds up to about 30.8 million views, roughly half the 61.2 million Season 1 drew in its first six weeks. What's on Netflix pointed to the 854 days between seasons. Boylan has also said Season 2 was written as eight episodes before Netflix cut the order to seven.

The series is also on this year's Kids' Choice Awards ballot, with nominations for Favorite Kids TV Show, Cormier and Elizabeth Yu (Azula). The ceremony is November 14.

Until Netflix posts a premiere date, any specific month in 2027 is a guess.
