Avatar Bending Styles Explained: The Real Martial Arts Behind Each Element

Tai chi, Hung Gar, Northern Shaolin and Baguazhang: how the creators turned real kung fu into bending, plus every special skill.

Last updated October 14, 2026.

Bending looks so convincing because it's built on real martial arts. The creators worked with Sifu Kisu of the Harmonious Fist Chinese Athletic Association, and each element got its own fighting style.

Waterbending: tai chi Waterbenders move like tai chi practitioners, with flowing motions that focus on alignment, breath and redirecting force. It fits a nation that adapts instead of meeting force head on.

Earthbending: Hung Gar Earthbending uses Hung Gar, chosen for its firmly rooted stances and powerful strikes. Earthbenders plant their feet and hit hard.

Toph's twist: Toph fights with Chu Gar Southern Praying Mantis, which she adapts into her own style because she's blind and "sees" through the ground.

Firebending: Northern Shaolin Firebenders use Northern Shaolin, with strong, fast arm and leg movements. Every punch and kick throws flame.

Airbending: Baguazhang Airbending comes from Baguazhang, known for circular movements and quick changes of direction. Airbenders evade and redirect more than they strike, in keeping with the Air Nomads' peaceful ways.

Special skills Over two series, benders found rarer techniques: - Healing and bloodbending (water). Katara heals; Hama taught her bloodbending in The Last Airbender. - Metalbending (earth), invented by Toph, and lavabending, used by Ghazan and later Bolin in The Legend of Korra. - Lightning (fire), used by Iroh, Azula and Zuko, and combustion, used by Combustion Man and P'Li. - Flight (air), which Zaheer unlocks in The Legend of Korra.

Bending in the new shows In Avatar: Seven Havens, fewer benders are born every year, and Ellora makes every known bender register with its Bending Brigade. Our Seven Havens guide has more on that world. For Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos, Knight Edge Media has reported an icebender named Hopa, which Paramount+ hasn't confirmed.
