Avatar Aang's Art Team Breaks Down the Film's Painted Look, with a LightBox Expo Panel on October 25
Production designer Jake Panian and art director Aaron Loftis joined the official podcast ahead of a Pasadena talk and screening.
The artists behind the look of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender are explaining how they did it. Production designer Jake Panian and art director Aaron Loftis were the guests on the second episode of Braving the Elements' fifth season, "Creating a New Animation Style for the Avatar Aang Movie," posted October 3.
Loftis will go deeper at LightBox Expo in Pasadena. "The Art of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender" runs Sunday, October 25, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Civic Auditorium. NickALive lists Panian and VFX supervisor Jerry Huynh as fellow panelists. Loftis said the talk will cover the film's visual pillars, early paintings and explorations, production art, its compositing style and concept art that didn't make the final cut.
The expo runs October 23 to 25 at the Pasadena Convention Center and ends with a screening of the film in the same room at 5 p.m., right after the panel.
Director Lauren Montgomery has described the style as hand-painted backgrounds projected onto 3D models, with character animation kept a little stiffer than Disney-style motion.
