Netflix's Live-Action Season 2 Brings Toph and Ba Sing Se, and Ends on a Cliffhanger
Critics liked it better than Season 1. Audiences were less sure.
All seven episodes of Season 2 of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender, adapting Book Two: Earth, arrived on June 25. Miyako, formerly credited as Miya Cech, joins as Toph, and the Gaang heads to Ba Sing Se, where Long Feng and the secret police known as the Dai Li hold the real power.
The finale follows the animated book's ending. Ba Sing Se falls, Zuko sides with Azula, and Azula strikes Aang with lightning while he is in the Avatar State. Katara uses her Spirit Oasis water, but the season ends without saying whether he survives. Toph, captured and separated from the group, discovers metalbending.
Showrunner Christine Boylan told SFX that the season was written as eight episodes before Netflix cut the order to seven. Critics rated it above Season 1: Rotten Tomatoes lists 71% from 24 reviews and Metacritic 68. The Rotten Tomatoes audience score has fallen to about 52%.
Netflix promoted the launch on June 23 with a Tudum virtual premiere hosted by Xolo Maridueña and an outdoor fan screening at the Autry Museum in Los Angeles.
