Seven Havens Creators Say They Love Korra and Call Out the Hate She Gets

The new show casts Korra as the Avatar who broke the world. Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino say that isn't the whole story.

Avatar: Seven Havens opens in a world that blames Korra for the Cataclysm. In the haven of Ellora, people celebrate her downfall and street performers mock her. Some fans read that as a sign her creators had turned on her. The creators say the opposite.

In a fan-question video for Teen Vogue's TikTok, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino laughed off the idea that the show is a veiled attack on Korra and told doubters to keep watching. Konietzko said they both love the character and that he is proud of The Legend of Korra. DiMartino called her one of his favorite characters.

Konietzko said people are free to dislike that series, but that much of the hostility toward Korra comes from misogyny and homophobia. Polygon reports he also pushed back on the old complaint that Korra lost her connection to the past Avatars: "Her uncle did that to her." DiMartino added that there is more to Korra's story than the first episodes show.

The two also explained the twins. Neither Aang nor Korra had siblings, and they wanted to tell a story about sisters finding each other. It wasn't their first idea, but it came early in development. Asked whether one twin is a "Dark Avatar," they wouldn't say.

Episodes 4 to 6 arrive on Paramount+ on October 16.
