Iroh's Voice Actor Greg Baldwin Hits Back at Attacks on Seven Havens' Gay and Disabled Characters
Most fans have embraced Jae and his boyfriend Datu. Baldwin had a blunt reply for the ones who haven't.
Avatar: Seven Havens has drawn a small but loud online backlash over two of its characters. Pavi, the new Avatar, is an amputee. Jae, the airbending guard who takes her under his wing, has a boyfriend named Datu. One post on X listed both and complained that Avatar is supposed to be a kids' show.
Greg Baldwin answered on October 12. Baldwin took over as Uncle Iroh after Mako's death and voiced him through The Legend of Korra. Introducing himself as the second voice of Uncle Iroh, he wrote: "So sorry LGBTQ and disabled people exist." When another user replied with an anti-gay slur, Baldwin posted an image of Iroh giving the middle finger. Topher Ngo, who voices Datu, thanked him.
Kotaku reports that most fans have welcomed the couple. In the premiere Datu runs to hug Jae, and Jae kisses him on the cheek in Chapter 3, "The Order."
Major Curda, who voices Jae, talked about the pair at New York Comic Con on October 9. He told The Hollywood Reporter that the representation excites him because the show doesn't make a big deal of it, and called Jae and Datu an example of love is love.
