Kuruk Is Officially 14 in Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos, and Janet Varney Is Voice Director

How old is Kuruk in Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos? He is 14 when the story begins. Paramount+ put that in writing on October 14 in a Sneak Peak article by Philiana Ng, crediting the reveal to showrunner Bryan Konietzko at New York Comic Con. Paramount's October 10 press release only called Kuruk a rebellious teenage Avatar.

Sneak Peak also adds credits the press release left out:

• Konietzko created the series and executive produces it with Mike DiMartino.
• Kihyun Ryu and Tim Hedrick are co-executive producers. Hedrick co-wrote the screenplay for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender with Christopher Yost.
• Ryu created Kuruk's character art, and Shemsu Turner designed and drew Nikik's. Konietzko calls the pet a koala-otter.
• Janet Varney, the voice of Korra, is voice director.

Konietzko says the show is set at "a time of peace." Paramount+ also quotes his Instagram explanation: his idea was a comedy that "flipped the script" on how Kuruk had been portrayed, focused on Water Tribe kids traveling the world.

From report to official

Knight Edge Media reported both details earlier. In August 2025 it reported a Nickelodeon Animation casting call for two 14-year-old leads, and it later said the role listed as Baroo was Kuruk. In December 2025 it reported that Varney had said at SacAnime Con she was voice directing an untitled Avatar Studios project.

Its other claims are still unconfirmed, including Migizi Pensoneau as co-showrunner, the characters Misunka, Hopa and Gawose, and a Fifth Nation pirate fleet. Paramount+ lists Konietzko as showrunner.

Still unannounced

Paramount+ says Kuruk's voice actor and a premiere date have not been announced. It gives no episode count and names no studios beyond Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon Animation Studios. Our Wave of Chaos tracker separates official details from reports.
