Seven Havens Is a Lost-Style Mystery Building to a "Big, Big Finale," DiMartino Says

DiMartino tells CBR the twins' story was plotted as one big arc, and that a Korra project from Avatar Studios' early days helped shape the Cataclysm mystery.

Michael Dante DiMartino already has an idea for the Avatar: Seven Havens finale. Speaking with CBR's Katie Doll after the show's renewal through Book Four, the Avatar co-creator said the series follows the Avatar: The Last Airbender model rather than The Legend of Korra, where Korra faced different villains each book. CBR doesn't say where the interview took place.

He said the team plotted out one big arc for twins Pavi and Nisha. Each book has its own themes and adventures, but together they make one big journey toward "the big, big finale."

When DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko started Avatar Studios, they were developing several projects, including a Korra one. Because of it, the team already knew what had taken place and what caused the Cataclysm, and wove some of those ideas into Seven Havens. He called what happened in Korra's time, and why people think she destroyed the world, part of the show's big mystery.

That puzzle is deliberate. On a recent episode of the Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast, he said one goal was to make a mystery show, pointing to his love of Lost and other series with an ongoing mystery, CBR reports. If viewers feel a little confused at first, he said, that's okay, because the show will answer some of those questions.

In an earlier interview quoted by CBR, he said the team wanted viewers to arrive with questions like how the world got so bad, why everyone hates the Avatar and how Pavi lost her leg. The aim is for the audience to "always hunger to know more."

Book One wraps on Paramount+ on October 30. Book Two is confirmed at 13 episodes with no release date, and Paramount+ says episode counts and dates for Books Three and Four are still to come.
